Tutoring has
become a large industry over the past 20 years, with many learning
centres and tutoring services to choose from. So, as you research
your options, here are a few questions to consider which will help
you make an informed decision:
- How long
has the tutoring service been operating in Toronto & area,
and how many satisfied clients have they already serviced?
- Is there
an Owner or Director of Education running the company that you
can talk to when necessary?
- How does
a student get matched with a tutor? Is it only a referral service
and you are left on your own to select, contact, and negotiate
with an instructor, or does the service quickly and efficiently
match you with a well-screened professional tutor?
- Do the instructors
have appropriate academic qualifications, and previous teaching
or tutoring experience? Are the tutors simply high school or university
students, or are they certified teachers and university graduates?
- Will you
receive 100% attention from your tutor in every lesson, or does
the instructor have other students to help at the same time?
- How quickly
can you be in contact with your tutor, and what satisfaction guarantees
are offered?
- Has the Canadian
Federal Government evaluated & certified the tutoring service
as an Educational Institution, which authorizes their tuition
fees to be Income Tax deductible? And, are Official Income Tax
receipts provided upon request?
- Does the
tutoring service charge GST on their tuition fees, or are they
tax-exempt?
- Does the
tutoring service offer you convenient payment methods, with the
choice of paying for 1 lesson at a time, or the option to choose
from a variety of money-saving tutoring packages?
- Does the
tutoring service or learning centre require students to follow
their proprietary learning programmes and workbooks, or are the
lessons customized to the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum,
and personalized to each student's specific needs, such as providing
important homework support?
- Is the service
an international franchise, or is it locally based with strong
relationships with area schools?
- Is the tutoring
available year-round at a convenient time and location, or must
you travel to a centre and attend lessons only at specified times?
- Does the
tutoring service commit you to a specific number of lessons per
week on specified days, or can schedules adjust to your tutoring
needs?
- Will the
tutoring service coordinate with your classroom teacher upon request?
- Does the
tutoring service give you the flexibility to have the same tutor
for each lesson, or match you with a different instructor if required?
- Will you
receive written progress reports after every lesson keeping you
updated, and ensuring continuity if you ever change tutors?
- Does your
service offer diagnostic testing & assessments? If so, are
they optional or mandatory, and what fees are involved?
